The increase in yields in Ukraine is largely due to comfortable weather conditions. The warming recorded in recent years has generally had a positive effect on commercial agricultural production. Winters are getting milder and summers are getting warmer.
According to experts, a warming of up to 2-2.5°C can help increase the yield of many crops (including wheat) in Ukraine, with some regional differences. Currently, the temperature increase in Ukraine is already 1-1.5°C and is approaching 2°C. There are almost no areas with limited thermal resources for growing heat-loving crops (corn and soybeans).
Under these conditions, the growing season for crops is already beginning and will start earlier and last longer, which will help increase crop productivity. In the southern part of Ukraine, rising temperatures and a longer growing season make it possible to grow two crops of some crops under irrigation.
Another positive effect of climate change is the significant warming of the winter months, which means less risk of freezing of winter crops. The winter period has been shortened by almost a month, creating conditions for earlier sowing of spring crops. The period of active vegetation of crops has already been extended by 10 days or more. These are additional opportunities for growing all types of heat-loving crops.
